Faro, the capital of the Algarve, is a location filled with stunning beaches, great restaurants, bars and nightlife, excellent shopping destinations, as well as plenty of culture and breathtaking natural landscapes. Many tourists miss the pleasures of Faro town, taking their airport transfers direct to resorts such as Albufeira and Lagos. However, a stop in Faro town itself offers a variety of attractions for holidaymakers.

Culture lovers will enjoy a trip to Faro Cathedral. With some parts of the building dating back to the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, and featuring intricate gilded carvings, decorated tiles (azulejos) and a variety of fascinating works of art, the cathedral is a real must-see. Faro town is also home to some great museums, such as the Museu Arquologico (Archaological museum) and Museu Etnografico (art and history museum).

Lovers of nature will appreciate the Rio Formosa Nature Reserve, which is home to an array of wildlife. Just along the coast from Faro, and set in a beautiful protected lagoon landscape, the lagoon upon which the reserve is located was created in the 1755 earthquake. The Reserve is also the site of the remains of many Roman and pre-Roman settlements.

Of course, Faro town, much as with the resort locations all along the Algarve, plays host to plenty of restuarants, bars and cafes. The Old Town in Faro is the hotspot for Faro nightlife, with relaxed eateries rubbing up beside modern, upbeat clubs and bars. As a university town, Faro caters well for its student populus, which assures a decent nightlife all round.
